Genuinely Human
I'm sharing below a short song that I originally wrote for myself, at a time when I felt I could do with a good lift. And it worked beautifully.
I used to play the song in a loop, over and over, for whatever time I had available, every once in a while. Also when I drove to work, I often played it in my car.
A while later, a good friend was facing a few challenges, and I told her about this song and asked if she wanted to give it a try and see if it worked also for her. It did.
Then one day, I mentioned this song to another friend, for whatever reason it was (she was doing very fine, so I was not offering the song as a possible extra help). She asked me to play and sing it, and then asked me to put it on a tape for her. A few weeks later, I met her again and she was enthusiastic about the song, telling me that now and then she was walking on the streets and would catch herself singing the song in the highest of spirits.
This same friend eventually called me asking if I'd not make a version of the song in English, so we could help a friend who worked in the same hospital as my friend, Vivian, did. My friend feared that her colleague doctor was beginning to find existence too unappealing... So I made the version in English.
To make a long story short, this little song started going around the world, passed on from friend to friend. A few years ago, I made a Spanish and a Danish version. Now, because I, too, have been going around the world, I have (temporarily, I hope) lost the Spanish version. When I get hold of it again, I'll add it to this page. (In the meantime, if you'd like the Spanish version, pls. use the Portuguese.)
The making of this song was motivated on the principle of self-hypnosis (not hypnotism, pls. note! these two concepts are far from synonymous).
We start singing this song in order to get a lift within, not because we identify with the lyrics and rhythm (which is a very jolly little Samba), but precisely because we feel detached from the image that the song evokes.
Then little by little an identification with that image starts sneaking in, so to speak. The more often we listen to and sing the song, the sooner the results start emerging.
Of course one does not have to be discouraged, or depressed, or lacking energy to face whatever it might be, in order to make use of this little song, as my friend Vivian well demonstrated.
You are welcome to give it a try, and if you do, I certainly wish you the best of results!
The words (lyrics) are right below. At the very bottom, you find links to download the language version of your choice.
I'd of course greatly appreciate getting a word from you on how the song worked for you, if you'd take a minute to let me know, sometime. |
