Historical Overview:
There are finally no seats yet to be confirmed for the 2004 Season!
The last seat was at Jordan, now, no longer vacant! At the end of the current overview is the name of the driver to partner Heidfeld, who had signed a preliminary contract with the Jordan Team, long before being officially announced. Who is the second driver?... Please see below.
Ferrari, Williams, McLaren, Renault and Toyota are keeping their 2003 driver line-up for the 2004 Season.
Sir Frank Williams, it might be worth recalling, has earlier been cited as referring to a stricking surprise to emerge, as far as the 2004 driver line-up. Nothing, however, has transpired in this regard, so far. All that is known is that Juan-Pablo Montoya is leaving for McLaren, but at the end of the coming Season.
Right before the Japanese GP weekend, B•A•R officially presented Button and Sato as their drivers for 2004 and, during the same weekend, Peter Sauber stated that his team will be racing with Fisichella and Massa.
Finally, Jaguar has announced the young Austrian Christian Klien as Mark Webber's team-mate, whereas Nick Heidfeld has signed a preliminary contract with Jordan, as mentioned. For the time being, however, Jordan has not signed him up officially.
Minardi has now made official what driver Gianmaria “Gimmy” Bruni had recently admitted in his country, as published by il Corriere della Sera: that he will be driving a Minardi in 2004. Though the Minardi Team would reportedly wish to retain Dutchman Jos Verstappen, as well as have Justin Wilson back, it was the young Hungarian Zsolt Baumgartner who was announced as the winner in the race for that seat, fueled by the official $upport of his Government. Doubt has however been cast over that deal, afterwards.
Verstappen is reported in the Netherlands to have dropped negotiations with the Jordan Team because of a clause that the Team wished included in the contract, and according to which they could drop the Dutch driver any time, along the season, if he did not deliver the expected results. (Has Heidfeld accepted a similar condition to sign?) In sheer contrast, what's reported in England is that negotiation was halted as a result of Verstappen's management's “impossible demands” regarding advertisement space on the EJ14's livery. Make your own conclusion.
So, among McNish, Wilson, Firman, Albers, and yet others, some of whom have officially competed in F1 Racing, a good number of potential candidates will have to search for racing seats elsewhere. Frentzen, for one, will return to the German DTM Series, whereas Allan McNish, who had reportedly decided to return to Sportscar Racing, but then was back on the race for a seat with the Jordan Team, competing head-to-head with Firman, Glock and Pantano, will finally head in the initially intended direction..
Which driver would be sitting in a Jordan, alongside Heidfeld, as the 2004 Season takes off in Australia, was the only question remaining. Reports were that the final choice was to be made among Giorgio Pantano, Timo Glock, McNish, Firman, quite unlikely Wilson (for lack of $upport), or another young driver bringing in convincing $upport.
On the eve of Valentine's day, Pantano was finally announced as the winner of this special race! And shortly after, Jordan announced that Glock will take the third driver's seat.
