Viewer, PLUS, SAFE, BIZ, Lite, + Asia
To my knowledge, there are two quality programs that can be used to produce illustrated, hyperlinked, and nicely formatted and organized eBooks: TreePad and Adobe. Both also offer free reader versions, so one is not forced to buy the programs in order to access their output files, which can then be shared freely, such as the eBook that you are currently enjoying.
My choice for TreePad has already been accounted for on MieNet, so I won't repeat it now (it's easily accessible here).
Having mentioned TreePad beyond its free Viewer (reader) in the introduction to this eBook, I feel I should offer you a bird's eye view of the TreePad line of programs, lest you might feel at a loss among so many choices. As a long-time user, I happen to have used them all, except for TreePad Asia.
I'll first refer to the shareware versions. But, before I get really going, let me just mention some common characteristics to all TreePad's, whether shareware or freeware: they are all super simple to install and uninstall, and just as easy and intuitive to use.
TreePad PLUS - the original TreePad shareware and multi-featured member of the family: it's a Word Processor, a Photo Album, a Web site Generator, PIM, Personal Database, among so many more features that I could not mention them all -- all in one single program! If you are curious, why not visit the TreePad Web site, and find out all about this incredibly useful program? (It is in my Start-Up directory -- I would literally not know how to live without it by now.)
TreePad SAFE - a development over TreePad PLUS: it offers all the features found in TreePad PLUS, in addition to state-of-the-art encryption and password protection. It is ideal for storing all that we wish to keep private: diaries, password collections, credit card numbers, and whatever other sensitive information we wish to keep in our computers safe from unauthorized eyes. You need just one care, as you use TreePad SAFE: if you forget the password you have assigned to encrypt a document, then you may just as well consider the document lost...the encryption is really powerful. That is to say, as the name of the program already states it, whatever you store via TreePad SAFE, will be really safe! -- as long as you do not forget the password.
TreePad BIZ (Business Edition) - this is la créme de la créme in the series! In addition to all the features found in TreePad PLUS + SAFE, this TreePad version offers thesaurus and spell-check in more than 20 languages, auto-dial, full-screen presentation mode, and a number of other real special goodies. It's a super program, really! Though it amazingly fits on a diskette, leaving room also for data files (like all other TreePad's).
I have seen TreePad BIZ referred to as office-on-a-floppy (on some software download sites). And, yes, TreePad BIZ is just about an entire office, itself, so many its functions. To this I should just add that, when you take TreePad BIZ + your data somewhere, on a floppy, the spell check and thesaurus have to go on a separate diskette, if you need them: these files are just as large as the program, itself, covering over 20 languages, as they do.

TreePad Viewer - is the only TreePad freeware fully compatible with TreePad PLUS, SAFE, BIZ and Lite. That is, it can read password protected files, display tree icons, images, text and paragraph formatting, etc, just like its shareware brothers. As you are experiencing it, yourself, TreePad Viewer is very useful for sharing and distributing TreePad files and eBooks. I also use it for opening TreePad files that I just wish to consult or copy and paste from, while I am working on a different file opened with my TreePad BIZ.
TreePad Lite - the original TreePad. This was the TreePad that I came across in 1995/6 and became so fond of that I never stopped using it and recommending it. Though I have the top-of-line TreePad BIZ, I have not stopped using TreePad Lite, just like in the good ol' days. This little big program, I believe has survived the birth of its more powerful brothers thanks to the usefulness and intuitivity of the concept that it introduced (tree-structured databasing), way back in the mid nineties. Try it out, if you haven't yet, and you'll see what I mean. It costs nothing, anyway, so why not see what you've been missing?...(that is, if you are not a TreePad user, of course:).
TreePad Asia - the only TreePad which I have never tried and have no use for: none of the languages I can speak and write use Asian characters. This TreePad version is equivalent to TreePad Lite (both freeware), just optimized for Asian fonts. Though I have no direct experience of TreePad Asia, it seems quite a propos to mention it in this eBook: after all, the current World Cup is taking place in Asia! ;)...
Though the great TreePad concept and power for storing and organizing data is likewise the backbone of these freeware versions just mentioned, neither TreePad Lite or Asia can handle images and export to web site, for example, as all the shareware versions can.
TreePad Viewer can of course display images and all else that is saved and displayed by the shareware line of TreePad. This is a sure advantage over TreePad Lite and Asia, which is made up for by a drawback in view of its freeware brothers: TreePad Viewer can only display, but not save files: it is a viewer, or reader program.

Last, but not least, here is my final observation. Just in case you may be wondering...no, I get no pay from TreePad! I'm just a very, very fond user of this program. For years now, I have considered TreePad the most useful software that I have installed in my computers! And it is so incredibly affordable and useful that I feel I should support it, as a way to help ensure that I can continue counting on TreePad and its development, as I have so far, for many, many more years to come. Other than that, good things, I believe, should be shared.
