FIFA's All Time World Cup Points

Up to the 1990 World Cup, a win = 2 points; whereas from the 1994 World Cup on, a win = 3 points. Thus the (only) apparent inaccuracies in the tables in this section. A few examples are discussed here, with the aim of facilitating a coherent interpretation of the points sum, below.

Note-1: The seeding was based on FIFA's rankings over the last three years and results at the last two World Cups (especially performances at the 2002 World Cup). Brazil easily came top of the seeding table with 64 points. England came out second to Brazil. Argentina and Italy came joint seventh with 44 points, closely followed by the United States, which ranked 9^th, just outside the top eight (the seeding countries). The Netherlands, currently a strong force in Europe, not having qualified for the 2002 World Cup, came 10th in the seeding rank, with 38 points.

Note-2: Countries known for a soccer tradition (such as Russia, above, Hungary, Belgium and Denmark, to cite a few) are missing the 2006 World Cup. On the other hand, a number of other countries are participating in the World Cup for the first time: Angola, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Serbia and Montenegro, and Ukraine (though of course Yugoslavia and Russia, above, figure on this All Time World Cup Points list – pls. refer to special notes (on the page Points criteria & special notes) for a few geo-political remarks). It may be worth adding that this year (2006) will be the sole entry for Serbia and Montenegro's participation in a World Cup, due to the referendum of May 21, 2006 (see further information). Brazil, quite the opposite case, remains the only country not to have missed a single World Cup tournament, since its inauguration.
