The 2006 WC Players' Sources
— Per World Cup Group: Where are they coming from?
– June 9 to July 9, 2006 –
See, below, how each group spans out, as far 2006 World Cup players who are (or not) home-based:
A total of 123 top World footballers, in all, out of the 352 to play at the 2006 World Cup, are coming from England to Germany. This is an impressive figure, as it would be equivalent to more than eleven teams! At any rate, this number represents over one third of all World Cup contesting players.
Some of the squads to be in Germany 2006 rely very heavily on players currently active at clubs outside the homeland, others on home-based players. See below how this spans out, among the Germany 2006 World Cup Groups.

Two Angolan players who have been playing abroad are currently unattached. Their last clubs having been abroad, they are thus counted, above, as players who have been abroad.
Now that they are formally two nations (see related remarks), it is worth pointing out that Serbian players comprise the absolutely majority (22 players in all), in the joint Serbia and Montenegro 2006 Squad. The list initially handed in, at FIFA, included 2 Montenegrin players, both attached to clubs outside the country. However, as the initial list had to be altered, due to injury of one of the two Montenegrin players, a Serbian replacement was called, making a total of 22 Serbian players in the squad. This player ended up walking out (see the Serbia and Montenegro Squad page) and no replacement was allowed by FIFA; the number of Montenegrin players, however, remains unaltered: 1.
