World Cup Groups, by Average Ranking
Please Note: FIFA has of course not ranked the World Cup Groups (as can be seen below)! FIFA's Rankings refer solely to individual Squads!
The "Group Rank," below (left column), represents a mere virtual "Group average-ranking," among the eight Groups comprising the 2006 World Cup.
This virtual "Group Rank" has been obtained by adding, for each World Cup Group, the Rank order number attributed by FIFA to every individual Squad comprising that Group. FIFA's order (used below as the start point) ensues from each Squad's Ranking Points amid all others (as remarked above, the Ranking Points and order appearing below were those available at FIFA, when the Groups were drawn, in Leipzig).
On the right column, a virtual "Group average-ranking" is shown, reflecting a true average of the official Ranking for every Squad in that Group. This virtual "Group average-ranking" (right column) yielded the virtual "Group Rank" (left column).
Also displayed on the right column (above the highlighted virtual "Group average-ranking") are both a total sum and an average of the Points obtained by the Squads in each Group – both sum and average being likewise virtual, given that they are not official. The Squads (and respective Groups) Points, rather than Rank, vantage point is that from which the Groups are viewed in the previous page.
Again, the Table below is self-evident, and far more intuitive to grasp than the many words required for reference to something for the first time, as is the case above, once more!
Interestingly, when a Group Average is considered, as on both the current and the previous pages, the so-called "Group of death" (Group C) fails to reveal itself as the most competitive one!... Below, it emerges only as the fourth most competitive Group – compare to the previous page, where, once more, the "Group of death" does not emerge as deadly as its quickly acquired reputation would indicate.
From the table below, again Group E (rather than Group C) emerges as possibly the most competitive one – compare with previous page, and compare, too, with the page Top Coaches - 2005.
Well, as already suggested, we are better off waiting for the World Cup to start, instead of allowing expectations or fears to build up in advance!
